It's like a train wreck,you can't look away.

A Question Often Asked.

Humans are interesting creatures. It's amazing what captures our attention. How many times have you been stuck in traffic because there is a car accident on the other side of the highway? I bet you hate that. I bet it drives you crazy that everyone has to slow down to look. But I also bet that when your turn comes, and you're directly across from that accident, you're slowing down to look too. Amazing that we can't help but be curious about and intrigued by disasters. Where do you think the saying "It's like a train wreck, you can't look away." came from?

That leads me to the following question that we are often asked. Have you ever had any disasters? We wish we could just answer that question with a simple "nope." But, we are human and making these cakes is hard work. And as if creating these delicious works of art wasn't hard enough, then we have to deliver them! Some of these cakes are very heavy and sometimes our deliveries require carrying them up or down stairs. Eeek. ;) How about driving with them? Sometimes we'll take a longer route because we know it's a smoother ride. Well. Before this winter hit! Trying to navigate around all of these pot holes is an adventure all on it's own!

Since we are often asked, I thought you might enjoy reading about a recent cake delivery. It did not go as smoothly as we had hoped. Read on....

Adventures in Delivering a Casino Cake

Last Saturday, our second stop of the day was to deliver casino cupcakes and a small casino cake for a 40th birthday party. This birthday cake was being delivered to a private home in Monroe, NY. This home was not right off the highway. It was deep into the town which required driving down many twisting, turning, mountain back roads. After a brief stop in Harriman, the snow started falling harder. It was coming down fast. The roads were slick and visibility was poor. I set the GPS and it said it would take 18 minutes. We had plenty of time to get there and figured we would be early. Well... not so much. The roads were icing over and very snow covered. We were taking it slow, barely getting over 15mph. We got to one road in Monroe (which shall remain nameless) and knew it was going to be bad. It was twisting, turning, and all down hill. We took it even slower, but I could feel that the tires were not gripping the road. We slid a bit and could not stop, but we regained control rather quickly. Then it happened again. The car would not stop, it slid, it spun, and went sideways. Yes, we slid down a hill sideways in slow motion. We thought we were going to crash. We both knew that we would not get hurt, as we were moving so slow and would most likely hit a snow bank, but we also both were worried that the cake would go flying!

Well, somehow (my guardian angel, I believe) I got the car straight and we came to a stop. We did not hit anything. We were fine. The cake was fine. But our hearts were pounding and our stomachs were doing flip flops. We sat there for a minute. Just stopped in the road. Debating what to do. Turning back was not an option because it meant going back down that road. Not delivering that cake was not an option either. So we forged on. Slooowwwllly. Eventually we arrived at the house and the cake and cupcakes were well received. We sent everything up, said our thank yous and headed back to the snow and ice covered car. We both knew that we could not go back the way we came. No way. No how. So I looked at the map and chose a better route on the GPS. Better, but not good. We managed to get back without any incidents. However that 18 minute GPS time turned into a 2 hour round trip ride.

So there you have it. Our recent cake disaster. ;) And now we present you with the small casino cake and casino cupcakes for the 40th birthday party on one snowy evening.

The Story Behind this Baby Animal and Baby Blocks
Baby Shower Cake

Baby Animal Baby Shower Cake

The Customer

I made this cake for the baby shower of a personal family friend. Now, while I did attend this baby shower, this cake was not my gift to the mom to be. This cake was purchased by another family friend, the mother-in-law of the mom to be, as a gift. So, between the mom to be, her mother-in-law, and myself, this cake was born!
The Beautiful Baby Shower was held ona perfect spring day at the Crab Tree Kittle House in Chappaqua, NY.

The Flavor

The flavor of the cake, Blissful Blueberry, was the idea of the mother-in-law. She thought it would be a great idea to have the cake be blue inside for a baby boy! She had no worries about picking an uncommon flavor, as she knew from experience how delicious it is! This seems to be the popular opinion of any of the berry flavor cakes. Even Cake Devil Erica... who does not like blueberries, loves when I make blueberry cake!
Here's a little confession... I did add some food coloring to the cake batter. When I reduce blueberries, I'm never quite sure what color it is going to turn the cake because it all depends on the blueberries. Sometimes it's a dark pink, sometimes it's purple and on a rare occasion, it's actually blue. This was not one of those rare occasions. If you look at the picture of the cut cake, the filling was the natural occurring color. The blue cake, blue icing and green icing are all results of a little bit of coloring.

The Design

The mom to be was poking around our website and was fond of the cake pictured on the right with the bear and the duck. She really loved the little animals on top and wanted something similar. She also really wanted some baby blocks on the cake. So, being a cake designer, I was quickly inspired and asked her if she would like a lion, a tiger, a elephant and a giraffe with some baby blocks and suggested using light blue, light green, brown and yellow. She said yes, thought it sounded great!
I went back and filled in her mother-in-law and the design was set! We were al excited for this cake! :)

Who Knew?

This cake was adorable! Everyone raved about it. But who knew what it would start?? Since the day I published photos of this cake on our website and our social media accounts, we have had so many inquires from people wanting this cake and/or some version of this cake. This, by far, has been our most requested design theme recently. We have already done and posted a few cakes that were inspired by this one!

Being a custom cakery and cake artists, we always try to keep our cakes unique and customized to each individual. Cake Devil Erica and I are still amazed and how many ways we can make a fondant elephant! Who knew? :)

Why the Newsletter Hiatus?

You may have noticed that our normally prompt newsletter has been on a little hiatus recently. You might even be wondering why. Or you may have been too busy drooling over all of the new delicious cakes that you haven't even noticed. ;) Well, let me explain why. But, before I do, let's just have a brief overview of our company:

Cake Devils consists of Cake Devil Stacy and Cake Devil Erica... that's it. No one else. Just the two of us to bake, decorate and deliver all these cakes. Not to mention, keep stocked with ingredients and supplies, take orders, write contracts, keep reporting, etc. Oh yes, I also maintain our website and social media. So, yes, we are busy little Devils. No complaints about that at all.

What caused the pause in our newsletter was actually growth. This was a great problem. Our Newsletter list grew too long to send out our blasts the way we had been and we hit a road block. Being just two people, we just did not have the time to resolve it as quickly as we would have liked. But it is resolved now and we will resume our newsletters! Sweet! :D

Earn Your Free Cake!

In our last newsletter, we teased you with a referral program coming this summer! Well... it's almost here! We made you a promise, and we're just about ready to launch the program! Sit tight... more details coming VERY soon!

April Newsletter and How You'll be Able to Earn Free Cake!

Don't forget to like our Facebook page! www.Facebook.com/CakeDevils
Happy Friday Evening!
Cake Devils here! Busy Cake Devils, up to our ears in cake! In case you couldn't tell from the tardiness of our April Newsletter. Since we're late, we'll keep this short and sweet... like us! :D

March was a busy, busy month full of hustle and bustle with orders, tastings, shows and  everyday business. The last minute weather postponement of the Suffern Crowne Plaza Bridal Show gave us two shows just two days apart. We had the Bethel Woods Bridal Expo only two day after the snow date. The excitement of the brides and other guests was infectious... or maybe that was the sugar high from our cake samples. ;) In any case, both venues are absolutely beautiful and in very different ways. We highly recommend checking them both out for your special events. If you book the Crowne Plaza, you'll already be heading in our direction for a cake and if you go with Bethel Woods, don't forget to call us for your beautiful centerpiece of a cake as well!

And now for some BIG news that we're very excited to share with you! We're gearing up to launch a Referral program where you'll be able to earn credit towards cake!! You'll earn a small percentage of every order you send our way. You can hold onto those credits if you want... Send us enough referral and maybe you'll earn yourself a free cake! You never know! Stay tuned for details. We'll be launching this summer!
Before we sign off, we just want to briefly mention our recent travels to the National Capital Area Cake Show where we took home not one, but two blue ribbons... but more on that in our next newsletter! Or if you just can't wait, take some time to browse our Meet the Devils page and our News & Accomplishments page. I've been doing some updating!

Holiday 2012

Really?? The holidays are here already??? Where does the time go?
Wow! It's been a whirlwind for the Cake Devils!!! We've been BUSY Little Devils!!! We have lots to be thankful for and lots to share with you. We'll try to keep this short and sweet, but it's not going to be easy! This Holiday Newsletter is jam packed!!!

First we want to talk about the Orange County Partnership Annual Event which took place at Anthony's Pier 9 the beginning of this month. What an amazing opportunity that was for us! We would like to extend a great big THANK YOU to everyone at the Partnership for the fantastic opportunity. We are so proud of the amazing replica of the Mediacom building that we made as the centerpiece for this incredible, almost 600 person event! We also want to extend great thanks to Mediacom for getting us the photos and blueprints of the building which allowed us to create the building to scale. In addition, we have to thank Ryerson Studio for the YouTube video of the model they created, which we watched thousands of times while constructing our replica!
(Check out Mike DelPriore's video here.) This, by far, was our largest (and most intense) project yet! On the night of the event, everything went off without a hitch. We successfully delivered the Mediacom building (that was too big to fit through a door), a ton of cake, 32 pounds of sauces and 10 pounds of sugar shards. We had a fantastic evening, met some AMAZING and INCREDIBLE people, and watched with glee as almost 600 people enjoyed our Devils Food Cake with Chocolate Butter Cream, Pumpkin Spice Cake with Cinnamon Cream Cheese Icing and Baileys Irish Cream Cake with Baileys Buttercream. We're still ecstatic from the rave reviews! :D

Congratulations once again to Mediacom on winning the Golden Shovel Award!

As we came down from that sugar high, quite a few days were filled with spicy Gingerbread, rather than cake, especially for Cake Devil Stacy! As you may know, Cake Devil Stacy teaches Wilton Method Cake Decorating Classes at the Michaels in Ramsey. More information can be found here. In preparation for teaching a gingerbread house class, I created an entire gingerbread village and did a gingerbread house demo at the store! This was quite a different experience from doing cakes!
Picture
Then we received an invitation (ok, request for help) from a friend who is a member of the Artists In the Park for Cake Devils to join them as mentors at The Bear Mountain Inn as they created Gingerbread Houses to be raffled off for the holiday season. The day was a lot of fun and we met some wonderful people and made some great contacts!!! The Bear Mountain Inn recently reopened after 7 years, and it's absolutely beautiful. We highly recommend checking it out! The Artists are a group of really great people and did a fantastic job!! Check out their work:

With the holidays upon us, we hope that you are all as excited as we are for this festive season. It’s our first holiday season as Cake Devils and as we look back upon this past year, we are overwhelmed with joy by all of the support that we have received. From the start we have had many opportunities to provide the service and product that we love most...delicious and exquisite cakes! All year long, we have been fortunate to help you celebrate many birthdays, showers, weddings and other joyful occasions. The feedback we have received has been uplifting and amazing and we couldn't be more appreciative. Equally exciting were the events we were able to partake in, such as the People to People fair, the Wedding Wire Networking Event, Anthony's Pier 9 bridal show, and, we’re thrilled to have become active members of the Wedding Vendors of the Hudson Valley, just to name a few. These opportunities have allowed us to share our unique products and services and have provided us the chance to meet people who have been able to help us grow and develop our business. We cannot thank you enough...and we are really excited for the plans we have in the works for the new year. We have some big changes coming and some exciting things happening! We thank you for all you have shared with us this year.

Of course, this wouldn’t be our newsletter if we didn’t share some recent cakes with you!

With so much sadness in the news recently, it's more important than ever to count our blessings and make the most of everyday. We wish you and your loved ones all a joyous and peaceful holiday season and a wonderful new year. Take the time to enjoy life. Tell your family you love them. Hug them a little tighter this year. Celebrate the good times and always make sure there’s a cake involved! :D
From our kitchen to yours, HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

Dark Pumpkin Pie

10/24/2012

Why is your Pumpkin Pie so dark?

Picture
With the leaves on the trees changing color and beginning to fall, it's safe to say that pumpkin season is in full swing. I personally LOVE pumpkin season! I love pumpkin anything... pumpkin coffee, pumpkin bread, pumpkin pie, pumpkin cake, pumpkin muffins, pumpkin cheesecake, triple chocolate pumpkin cheesecake... you get the point. And with the exception of the coffee, I make all of the above from scratch with fresh and fine ingredients.

But this blog post in particular is about Pumpkin Pie, so let's get back on track. I make a rich, delicious pumpkin pie. But I find that I am sometimes asked why my pumpkin pie is so dark. Until recently I never really gave it much thought or realized that it looked dark to the average person. Ironically though, everyone that questioned the color was also unbelievably pleased with the taste of the pie. They rave about how great it is.

Well, I recently discovered the answer to this question. I have this little warm spot in my heart for Produce Pete, who I occasionally catch on a rare Saturday morning, and he recently did a segment on winter squash. When he got to butternut squash, one of the things he said is that many commercial bakeries actually use butternut squash instead of pumpkin to make pumpkin pie! I was floored! I never ever knew this. Now don't get me wrong, I love butternut squash, and make a killer butternut squash soup, but I'm not going to put it in a pie and tell you it's pumpkin! So, there you have it... my pumpkin pie is so dark because it's made with actual pumpkin! Go figure!

Cake Devil Stacy and Cake Devil Erica would like to give a big thank you to all of you that are supporting us on this journey. Merging our two cake businesses has been a lot of hard work, yet so exciting at the same time.

While we have been friends for many years, it was by mere coincidence that we both developed this amazing talent and incredible passion for cake. Our delicious works of art bring joy and happiness, both to us, our customers and their guests.

Cake is such a happy business and we are so blessed to be able to provide it. Cake is always present at celebrations and events. No one is ever mad or sad, with a piece cake in their hand. Making beautiful and delicious cakes is such a rewarding job. It is an amazing feeling to see the joy and delight of someone seeing their cake fully finished. It's possibly, even more amazing to see how much people enjoy eating the delicious works of art.

We look forward to bringing you lots of new cake creations and bits of information through our blog.

Thank you for your continued support. We look forward to feeding you soon!!!
